Practitioner analysis
Dematic is the largest material handling systems integrator in North America by revenue. Their strength is large, complex multi-technology projects where you need a single accountable partner for conveyor, sortation, AS/RS, and controls. Implementation timelines for full system projects are 18–36 months — these are not fast deployments. Their WCS (iQ Software) is mature and deeply integrated with their hardware.
Dematic's size is both their strength and weakness — you will be a medium-sized account to them unless your project exceeds $20M. Project management quality varies significantly by regional team and project manager assignment. Get references from similar-scale projects with the specific team that will run your project. Their hardware is proprietary to a significant degree — switching costs are high after installation.
Large ($10M+) DC automation programs at major retailers, e-commerce, and food & beverage companies where a single-vendor accountability model is worth the premium.
Not a fit for mid-market projects under $5M — you'll get junior project teams and commodity attention. Also evaluate carefully if you value flexibility — Dematic deployments tend to create long-term vendor dependency.
