Modula
Vertical lift modules for parts, tools, and inventory storage
Modula manufactures vertical lift modules (VLMs) that deliver stored items to an ergonomic access point, eliminating wasted walking in parts rooms and warehouses. Their Modula Lift series is one of the most widely deployed VLM systems in North America.
Manufacturing and parts distribution operations needing vertical lift module storage to reduce pick area footprint
High-throughput e-commerce fulfillment or operations with very large or heavy SKU profiles
Strengths
- Strong density improvement — VLMs recover significant floor space vs. shelving
- Wide range of tray sizes and weight capacities for diverse part profiles
- Operator-friendly pick interface with light-guided picking support
- Proven in manufacturing, MRO, and parts distribution environments
Weaknesses
- Throughput limited compared to AS/RS alternatives — not designed for high-volume fulfillment
- VLM model works best for parts and tools, less ideal for consumer e-commerce SKUs
- Integration complexity with WMS/ERP varies widely by vendor and version
Practitioner analysis
Modula is the leading vertical lift module (VLM) manufacturer globally, with strong North American presence. Their VLMs are well-engineered, modular, and widely deployed in MRO, parts distribution, and manufacturing kitting applications. Implementation is fast (2–6 weeks per unit) and ROI is typically strong in space-constrained operations.
VLMs make sense in specific use cases — high SKU count, low-to-medium throughput, space-constrained operations. They don't scale to high-throughput goods-to-person applications. Modula's value proposition is strongest in MRO and parts distribution; e-commerce fulfillment is usually better served by AutoStore or shuttle systems.
MRO/parts distribution, manufacturing kitting, e-commerce returns processing, and tool crib management where SKU count is high but throughput is moderate.
Don't expect VLM throughput to match shuttle AS/RS. Wrong category for high-volume e-commerce fulfillment.
Questions to ask in your RFP / demo
- What is the realistic peak throughput per unit and how does that scale with multiple units?
- What is the typical ROI period in our specific use case and operation type?
- What is the integration story with our WMS — pre-built or middleware?
